FAQ’s – your horse bedding queries answered

IS MISCANTHUS HORSE BEDDING DUST EXTRACTED?

Our Miscanthus bedding is dust extracted which helps your horses to breathe easier and also ensures horse owners don’t inhale dust while making the bed and mucking out.

We have had great feedback from our customers where their horses have experienced reduced coughing due to the low dust level.

DOES MISCANTHUS HORSE BEDDING BREAKDOWN?

Pure wood bedding materials like sawdust and wood shavings are super-high in carbon which absorbs all the plant-feeding nitrogen in soil while it decomposes, which is why farmers can be hesitant on spreading muck heaps and people find it hard to get rid of wood shavings.

Miscanthus bedding breaks down in to organic matter much quicker and can be incorporated back into the soil and spread on arable land.

Our suggestion:

Make a few heaps and rotate them for a couple of months so it breaks down. This should allow sufficient time for it to break down before spreading on the land.

HOW SUSTAINABLE IS MISCANTHUS HORSE BEDDING?

Our bedding is made from the crop Miscanthus which is a perennial grass that can grow over 3 metres tall. It’s grown by British farmers, on unproductive farmland and after initial planting requires no fertilisers, chemicals or soil cultivation, for its potential 20-year+ life cycle.

Miscanthus absorbs carbon and helps to boost biodiversity on UK farms. It’s harvested every year in the late winter/early spring months and finely chopped up to make our horse bedding.

The film used for our packaging is also 100% recyclable.

HOW ABSORBENT IS MISCANTHUS BEDDING?

Due to the spongey inner core of Miscanthus, which is known as the ‘pith’ inside the cane, our bedding is more absorbent than wood shavings.

The bedding is so absorbent that any liquid is held in a very compact area meaning you can very accurately lift out the wet material and top up with new dry material – this means the bedding lasts longer and is more cost effective in the long run.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM ORDER QUANTITY?

The minimum order quantity we currently offer is 1 pallet (35x20kg bales).

We realise this is sometimes not suitable for some of our customers and are always on the lookout for new stockists to make buying our bedding more accessible. You can also use our “bedding buying group” option where you and a group of friends can buy together, which can help with storage and delivery.

HOW DOES MISCANTHUS HORSE BEDDING MAKE THE YARD MORE EFFICIENT?

The high absorbency of Miscanthus bedding means that any liquid is held in a very compact area which can be accurately lifted out and topped up with dry material. This makes mucking out quick and a relatively small muck heap is produced in comparison to other types of bedding. It also means the bedding lasts longer and is more cost effective in the long run.

DO HORSES EAT MISCANTHUS BEDDING?

Our Miscanthus horse bedding is naturally unpalatable to horses.

IS MISCANTHUS HORSE BEDDING PACKAGING RECYCLABLE?

Our Miscanthus horse bedding film is 100% recyclable.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS IF THE BEDDING IS NOT STOCKED LOCALLY TO ME?

Option 2: For multi-pallet orders contact equine@terravesta.com and one of the team will be able to assist you with a quote, delivery and any other queries.

Option 3: Use our “bedding buying group” option where you and a group of friends can buy together, this can help with storage and delivery.

HOW LONG CAN YOU KEEP UNUSED MISCANTHUS BEDDING BEFORE THE QUALITY STARTS TO DEGENERATE?

Our bedding is made purely from finely chopped Miscanthus with nothing else added which makes it extremely durable. You can order large amounts with the confidence that quality will not be reduced.

Due to it being 100% natural & dry, Miscanthus bedding remains at the same quality from the day you purchase and it does not rot like other types of bedding.

We do, however, recommend that bales are kept in a dry place away from direct sunlight as the plastic packaging can sweat and cause some condensation.
